This idea started with Jalopnik Editor-in Chief Matt Hardigree. He wanted to create a film festival that would celebrate the best of car racing and entertainment. Gawker Media’s sales team helped this idea come to fruition by securing Gran Turismo 6 as the perfect partner for this event.

The Jalopnik Film Festival was a two-day event held on September 18-19, 2013. I organized a kickoff party at the Classic Car Club of Manhattan. The event featured four game simulators to allow guests to be the first to play the all-new Gran Turismo 6, as well as a panel discussion with Ken Block, James Glickenhaus, Kaz Yamauchi and Tamir Moscovici, moderated by Hardigree.

Panel Participants
Kaz Yamauchi | CEO, Polyphony Digital and Producer of the Gran Turismo Series
Ken Block | Professional Rally Driver
Tamir Moscovici | Filmmaker
James Glickenhaus | Movie Director

For the second day finding the perfect theater was essential. I scouted locations to find perfect place for the film festival.  In the end I determined that our ideal location was the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s iconic Rose Cinemas. It was an all-day affair that started at 10am till 11pm. The attendees enjoyed complimentary food and drink throughout the day while they watched six movies, I secured licensing rights too, Easier Said Than Done, Black Air, Grand Prix, and Senna. Thanks to Universal, the grand finale of the festival was the first public screening of RUSH, one week before its national release.

This first ever Jalopnik Film Festival was an overwhelming success! On top of it I received a great compliment from the manager of the BAM Rose Cinema, he said it was the smoothest run event he has ever seen at the theatre.

In the late 1980s, the Buick Grand National introduced many American muscle-car fans to the joys of turbocharging. Filmmaker Andrew Filippone Jr. captured the car's dichotomy -- a mundane sedan that performs like a supercar -- as a metaphor in his film "Black Air."
